Solen skiner och det är spring i benen. Det röda vinbären är härligt sura och i skuggan är det svalt och skönt. Familjen är samlad och livet är fint.

Vi tog en blandning av dokumentära ögonblicksbilder av barnen när de lekte och mer uppställda familjebilder av dem alla tillsammans. En typ av fotografering som passar alla familjer, med barn stora som små.

Jag har inga egna barn, men bara genom att följa med syskonbarnens uppväxt på andra sidan landet så märker jag hur snabbt tiden går. På bara några månader har de små gått så snabbt fram i utvecklingen att jag knappt känner igen dem, en förändring som måste vara ännu svårare att greppa när det är dina egna barn som du ser varje dag.

Ena dagen är de värnlösa små knytt för att nästa vara viljestarka småbarn som rusar fram i livet. Vardagen är full med milstolpar och det måste vara nästan på omöjligt svårt att känna att man hinner med i svängarna.

Jag skulle därför unna alla småbarnsfamiljer är en fotografering. En eftermiddag då ni bara får vara tillsammans hela familjen och låta en utomstående följa med och fånga alla ovärderliga ögonblick på bild.

Ni kommer troligen få uppställda dagis och skolfoton när barnen tittar bestämt in i kameran, så låt den här fotograferingen fokusera på er och er vardag. Bjud hem mig till er, och gör något tillsammans som ni alla kan njuta av. Läs en bok i soffan, spela brädspel, baka bullar eller busa i sängen! Det behöver inte vara så invecklat och framför allt – det behöver inte vara perfekt.

Resultatet blir bilder fulla med liv och rörelse, små glimtar in i er vardag tillsammans som bara kommer bli mer värdefulla med åren.

I somras gjorde jag en sådan kort familjefotografering hemma hos familjen Sjölind. Det var både fart och fläkt och lite lugnare stunder med minstingen. Vi fick några mera uppställda bilder och ett gäng naturliga bilder fyllda med liv och rörelse. Viktigast var att familjen var samlad och att alla för en gångs skull kunde vara framför kameran samtidigt. Ovärderliga bilder som på något sätt bara blir mer värda med åren.

I prefer to start every family session at home. This way we can meet in a place where everyone literally feels at home, safe and hopefully not as nervous to be stepping in front of the camera. We don’t have to fret about the weather and can always choose to go outside for more photos if the weather allows.

This summer I did one of these at home family sessions with old clients and dear friends of mine. Our session was relaxed and playful but we still managed to get photos of the entire family gathered in one place. Possibly the most valuable thing a photographer can offer.

Mitt i sommaren fick jag glädjen att åka tillbaka till Sideby, utanför Kristinestad, för att träffa Sandra och Victor. Deras familj hade sen vi sist sågs på deras bröllop växt med två små härliga typer och på samma ställe som vi flera år tidigare fotograferat bröllopsporträtt så tog vi nu familjebilder. En fartfylld fotografering full med lek och bus, precis som jag vill ha det. Just så här vill man väl komma ihåg barndomens somrar hemma i Finland när man är mitt uppe i vardagen på andra sidan jorden.

De allra finaste minnena med familjen är sällan från semestern eller högtiderna, utan från vardagen. Den kletiga, klottiga vardagen med allt vad den innebär. Det är kanske sällan vi hinner njuta av allt i stunden när vi har vardagen upp över öronen men ser vi tillbaka så är det väl ändå just där som magin ligger. Vardagsromantiken, när allt klickar för en stund och vi kan njuta av allt vi har just där och då. De här stunderna kommer och går men de är värda att minnas och just därför så finns det inget jag föredrar över att fotografera familjer i deras hem.

En familjefotografering behöver inte vara svårare än så. Du bjuder hem mig till er och vi umgås en stund utan större planer. Det finns tid att ligga i sängen och läsa en bok tillsammans, att sitta på golvet och bygga med klossar och att sätta sig i köket för att äta mellanmål. Allt ryms med, allt hör till. Bilderna ni får från en sådan fotografering är fyllda av liv. De känns äkta och genuina eftersom de är just det.

En sådan fotografering fick jag göra tillsammans med Ulrika, Jakob och Svante förra våren. Deras vackra hem var en sällan skådad bakgrund men fokus i bilderna ligger ändå på dem tillsammans.  Svantes favoritbok för stunden och hunden Selma som följer med från rum till rum. Det skapar bilder som är fyllda av ljus och värme, precis som denna lilla familj.

Jag har några lediga datum kvar för familjefotograferingar i vår och sommar. Jag kommer åka runtomkring i svenskfinland för mitt arbete och kan komma hem till dig praktiskt taget var du än är. Hör av dig så planerar vi in något roligt.!

Too often wedding and family photography are connected to a useless and even harmful hunt for perfection. The industry in general profits from people chasing perfection, needing the perfect dress, decor, stationary… I sure do enjoy these things myself and put quite a lot of effort into our own wedding decor, just as I do in my home, wardrobe, social media… It’s one thing wanting to surround yourself with beautiful things, but when that becomes a cause for stress, perfection overall becomes the main goal, we’ve missed something. Something important.

With time I’ve realised the power I have with the stories I share, and how important I find it to show that my work is not about chasing perfection. When I join a family for a day I won’t frown upon dirty dishes and piles of toys left on the floor. On the contrary, if these signs of life have been cleaned out they will be dearly missed. 

The same of course goes for wedding days. While I enjoy capturing photos of beautiful details around your home and the reception space, that doesn’t mean I will censure out the rest. On the contrary, a hallway filled with shoes of near and dear ones that have gathered to celebrate with you is a beautiful thing. Just as a dinner table with half drunk wine glasses and personal clutter gives a truer image of what your reception was actually like. That doesn’t mean the photo of the neatly set table before everyone sat down to eat isn’t necessary, I’m just saying they both are.

When going into more depth all of this becomes even more important. When only sharing the curated photos, filled with perfectly decorated spaces and kids standing neatly in line in their freshly ironed clothes, we tell the world what stories are acceptable. There is a thin line between telling what stories are acceptable and what people are. 

In an already divided world it’s important we pay attention to what stories we share. Over the world, and closer than we would like to think, there are people that can’t live their lives without fear of losing it. This is a fact, whether we like to accept it or not. I need not give examples since the news from the last week are enough to prove this point.

While it’s far from enough, representation matters.

The stories we share matter, and that’s why I want to start something new.

I’m now writing to you who have felt like an outsider looking in when viewing wedding sites and photographer’s portfolios like mine. I want to do better and I want my photography to represent you too. If you would be interested in having me document your life and loved ones, but for some reasons have hesitated to get in touch, I hope you will do so now.

Extraordinary Ordinary

Starting a new project such as this feels a bit scary since I haven’t seen anything like it done before. In a way it’s like I’m merging my photography business with my art. I feel vulnerable trying something new but if I even got to tell one special story that would not have been out there otherwise, I’m overjoyed.

I have given this some thought and am excited to step outside my comfort zone. If you reading this come to think of something that I’ve missed, or that I could do better, please let me know. This is an attempt to give this work more meaning, to try to contribute to a world more accepting and loving towards people unlike ourselves. I have no idea how it will turn out, but I am ready to give it a go.

I won’t set down any rules or boxes for you to fit in, just say this: if you feel like you have a story that hasn’t been told or shown enough, I would be honoured to tell it through my photography. Don’t nominate other people, but let them know about this work of mine and let them sign up themselves if they’re interested.

It was a warm day and the sun was blazing from a clear blue sky so we took cover in the shade the old apple trees Ayden was happy to lie there and look at Iris while she roamed around the garden. She walked through the fields and got help picking the sun war raspberries before we went inside the old house to take a look.

Listening to Yvonne and Carolus’ renovation plans was so inspiring and I hope to see them again when they move in. Until then we have these warm photos to look back on.
